New grant program to help recovery of Victorian bushfire-affected communities

Media Releases, 10 October 2012

The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) has announced a new small grants program to assist the long term recovery of communities affected by the 2009 Victorian bushfires.

The program, called Grants for Resilience & Wellness (GR&W) recognises that, more than three years on, an important part of community recovery is having opportunities to connect, share experiences, enhance individual and community wellbeing and resilience, and to build strengths and capacities for the future. It builds on the Repair, Restore, Renew (RRR) and Skills, Training, Engagement, & Practical Support (STEPS) programs, which FRRR has been operating.

FRRR’s Natural Disaster Program Manager for Victoria, Natalie Egleton, said this program provides support to bushfire-affected communities for projects and programs that will help to increase resilience, community capacity, community connectedness and social wellbeing.

“FRRR has been working in natural disaster recovery for a number of years. We’ve seen the impact that programs which focus on bringing people together can have, and in conjunction with the Victorian Government, we’ve been developing this unique program. There are some great examples of what has already been achieved, such as Through Women’s Eyes, and we look forward to working with and supporting other communities in their long-term recovery initiatives,” Ms Egleton said.

Funds for Grants for Resilience & Wellness are provided by the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund. There is a total of $2.9 million available state-wide and grants will be distributed until funds are expended.
