Navigating challenges and driving regional transition

Since its launch in 2018, economic development agency The Next Economy (TNE) has become a trusted advisor and collaborator, working with regional communities, experts, and decision-makers across government and industry to drive the transition to net zero. Partnering with FRRR has allowed TNE to receive philanthropic support that required a DGR-1 pathway, and has supported TNE’s efforts to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of climate and energy while strengthening regional economies in ways that are good for both people and planet.

As government, industry, and investors accelerate efforts to transition to net zero, TNE’s role has become increasingly vital. The organisation’s work is not without its challenges. The large-scale and fast-paced roll-out of renewable energy projects and green industry has met community opposition in many regions. TNE is uniquely positioned to address these challenges, providing the expertise and leadership needed to support community discussion and ensure that regional communities are well-prepared for the transition.

The funds raised through FRRR have enabled TNE to:

  • Assist communities and industries in transitioning towards decarbonisation and economic diversification, such as in Gladstone, Queensland and Hay and Carrathool in New South Wales.
  • Develop innovative projects that promote good development in renewable energy, like Striking a New Deal for Regional Australia and the Inclusive Clean Energy Workforce Project.
  • Engage with First Nations communities to explore new economic opportunities in the energy and land sectors.
  • Shape policies at state and national levels to support regions in managing the transition to net zero, such as legislation around the federal government’s Net Zero Economy Authority.

Over the past twelve months, TNE has managed continued growth, maintaining its focus amongst increasing requests for assistance while diversifying its income streams. The organisation has expanded its team, implemented new digital platforms, and focused on evolving internal systems and processes to support its growing portfolio of complex projects.

TNE’s ability to adapt to changing demands, challenges, and opportunities has cemented its role as a leader in regional economic transition. With the support of the FRRR account to enable receipt of tax-deductible donations (DGR-1), TNE will continue to work alongside communities to build resilient, sustainable economies that work for both people and the planet.
