United in uniform at Nathalia’s spring show

Community Stories, 30 July 2025

For more than 120 years, the Annual Spring Show has been a highlight of Nathalia’s community calendar, bringing together locals and visitors alike for a day of celebration, entertainment and rural tradition. Held in northern Victoria, this iconic event is run by a dedicated group of 20 Committee Members and supported by 75 hardworking volunteers who help bring the day to life.

But amid the hustle and bustle of show day, one challenge has persisted: how to quickly identify who’s who among the crowd, while also keeping the committee members and volunteers sun-safe. Volunteers, stewards, judges and show-goers alike often struggled to locate committee members or find someone to ask for help or directions.

The simple solution? A distinctive and functional volunteer uniform, courtesy of a $1,145 Nutrien Ag Solutions Grant! The sun-smart short and long-sleeved shirts were purchased through a local clothing supplier and the Show Society enlisted a local embroiderer to add the organisation’s logo. The result was a consistent, recognisable uniform that volunteers could wear with pride.

On the big day, volunteers and committee members were easy to spot as they assisted judges, guided exhibitors, supported patrons with mobility needs or helped reunite lost children with their families. The new uniforms enhanced safety, improved coordination and created a welcoming sense of structure.

The uniforms fostered a sense of pride and belonging among the volunteers as well as a wider impression of unity and professionalism to showgoers. They even inspired some community members to express an interest in joining as future volunteers or get involved in next years show.

The Annual Spring Show plays a vital role in preserving Nathalia’s heritage and cultural traditions while also contributing to the local economy. It provides opportunities for community organisations to fundraise, supports local talent (from horsemanship to homecrafts), and brings a welcome boost in visitor traffic to town businesses.

Thanks to this small but meaningful investment, the show day ran more smoothly than ever, proving that something as simple as a uniform can have a big impact on community connection, volunteer pride and overall event success.
