FRRR ABC Takeover Youth Catalyst Grants
Each year, FRRR and our donor partners collaborate with ABC to support a group of young people to play an active role in shaping their community’s future.
Takeover is a place-based storytelling and capacity building program from ABC and FRRR that empowers young people to share their voices and make a positive impact in their community. It’s all about providing young people with the tools and resources they need to drive change on issues that matter most to them – and creating connections with the organisations and leaders in their community that can support them to bring it to life.
The Takeover Journey begins with ABC producers delivering storytelling workshops to local year 9 and 10 students in a community. Following the workshops, students are invited to enter the Takeover Storytelling Competition, with up to 40 young winners chosen to participate in the Takeover Summit.
During the Takeover Summit, participants work together to talk about issues that matter to them, and work closely with local community organisations to develop youth-led solutions to these issues.
With the support of our donor partners, and through Takeover Youth Catalyst Grants, community groups and young people can work together to bring these ideas to life in their community.
The Takeover Youth Catalyst Grants are a mechanism by which we can inspire hope and confidence in young people and affirm to them that their ideas are worthwhile; that within their community they have organisations that believe in them; and that they can be agents of change within their community.

Targeted investment in local youth in communities
FRRR works closely with the NFP community and Takeover participants to identify up to six partner organisations in the Takeover locations who are eager to join us on the journey and work with our youth participants. These organisations will have the opportunity to co-design projects with the young change-makers and the broader community, with grants of up to $6,000 available to support the development and execution of these exciting projects in the community. Embedded in this funding is an opportunity for young people to support the project implementation in paid youth advisor roles.
Through this program, and with the support of our donor partners, we hope to create stronger, resilient and more connected communities, with increased voice and agency for youth.

Takeover is coming to Lismore, NSW in May 2024.
We have been working with local youth to have their voices heard and provide opportunities for them to create change on issues that matter to them through the Takeover Youth Catalyst Grants and we look forward to sharing these stories of impact!
In 2023, Takeover went to Mildura, Victoria and the program was expanded to enable not-for-profits to take action on the ideas generated by local youth at the Takeover Mildura Summit.
During the weeklong Takeover Summit in May, 36 young people from Mildura and surrounds participated in a leadership summit. With the support of mentors and engagement with local stakeholders, they had the opportunity to explore issues that matter to them and develop ideas to make Mildura a better place to grow up.
FRRR led Takeover participants through an exciting new youth-led granting process. Young people met with youth-focused community organisations to discuss and co-design their ideas for change, and invited aligned organisation to apply for grants up to $4,000 to implement their ideas. Embedded in this funding is an opportunity for young people to support the project implementation in paid youth advisor roles.
