Mirror Mirror… youth reflect impact of drugs & alcohol

Community stories: 28 February 2018

The Roper Gulf Regional Council worked in partnership with the Indigenous Community Volunteer organisation to adopt and adapt the 2014 Heywire Youth Innovation Grant project ‘Mirror Mirror on the Screen’ in a bid to increase awareness of the effects of drugs and alcohol abuse within families on young people. After working with the specialist drama teachers to script their play and develop their acting skills, the young cast had help from the local Council and community groups to build a stage, props and backdrops, funded via a Heywire Youth Innovation Grant for $8,074. The grant also funded the purchase of costumes and a sound system.

One dilemma less for Gracemere’s SES

During significant weather events, Gracemere SES in Queensland is faced with the dilemma of which communities get assistance first, with only one of their two vehicles was fitted with a storm and rescue tray. A $5,000 Domino’s Give for Good grant got both vehicles on par, and the timing was perfect - the upgrade happened within weeks of Tropical Cyclone Debbie impacting the area.

Kidz Group provides a safe place for kids impacted by domestic violence

The effects of domestic violence on children are well documented, yet often there are no systems in place to support these kids who witness the physical and /or sexual and emotional abuse, threats, and aftermath of such incidents. Speak Out 4 Kids project, in the Nambucca Local Government Area, received a $45,000 I4CI grant to help deliver an eight-week program called Kidz Group for children aged between 8-12 years who have experienced living with or being exposed to domestic violence and are no longer in that environment.
